On Road Media Podcasting Training and Video Blogging Workshops

Supporting diversity and inclusion on the social web

Trans Media Action (funded by Channel 4 and the BBC)

Since October 2011, On Road Media has been running Trans Media Action with support from Channel 4 and BBC. The project is investigating ways of transforming how the media portrays transgender people.

We’re delivering a series of workshops with media professionals and running a social innovation camp with the following aims:

  1. To find out where the media is in terms of their understanding of trans issues
  2. To try out some fun and engaging workshop techniques to inspire journalists to find out more and come up with good programming and story ideas involving trans people

Workshops

You can read more about how one of the workshops went here and see a sample agenda here.

Our first workshop was held at Channel 4 on November 22nd 2011 and was attended by:

  • 8 media professionals from various documentary production companies
  • A member of Trans Media Watch
  • Donna and Karen from Channel 4’s “My Transsexual Summer” (MTS).

The second workshop was held at the BBC and was attended by:

  • 3 members from the BBC Diversity team
  • 7 in-house BBC producers and commissioning editors in television and radio
  • 3 members of Trans Media Watch
  • Karen and Fox from Channel 4’s “My Transsexual Summer”.

Two further workshops will be held on 2nd and 22nd February 2012 at Channel 4 and the BBC respectively.

Trans Camp January 13th 2012

This social innovation camp is a 1-day event where developers and designersinnovatorsmedia professionals and people from the trans community will gather together to come up with ideas to improve media coverage and awareness of trans people in the UK.

The objective is to think of innovative and proactive things we can do to raise general awareness of trans issues within the media as well as the general public.

Throughout this process we will also gather information and ideas to design a multi-platform strategy to engage media professionals with trans issues, and the wider trans community, using the web, face-to-face training and mobile applications. This will form part of a wider project which will take place over 3 years.
