A SOCIAL NETWORK FOR YOUNG GYPSIES AND TRAVELLERS IN THE UK
In February 2008, On Road Media was commissioned by Media for Development to set up a network for young Gypsies and Travellers - the project was funded by Mediabox and led by Unltd - and provide its users with training, equipment and on-going support. "Chavvy" is a Romany word for a young person and, as is always the case with any project involving On Road Media, the young people of the network participated in all stages of its development, including the naming of the network.
The network won the Community Award at the 2008 UK Catalyst Awards - these awards are designed to promote people who are utilising modern technologies to support and empower communities - and was featured in the book, Social by Social (a practical guide to using new technologies to deliver social impact), as well as The Guardian newspaper in July 2008.
It continues to be used as an example of how marginalised groups can be empowered to find their voice on the web and challenge stereotypes, both on- and offline.
